Joel and Ethan Coen, the Academy Award winning geniuses behind No Country for Old Men and The Big Lebowski direct an all-star cast which includes George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, Brad Pitt, and J.K Simmons. They come together in an outrageous spy comedy about murder, blackmail, sex addiction and physical fitness!
Released in 2008 Burn After Reading grossed over $163 million from its $37 million budget and the film received nominations at both the Golden Globes and British Academy Film Awards.
When a disc filled with some of the CIA’s most irrelevant secrets gets in the hands of two determined, but dim-witted gym employees, the duo are intent on exploiting their find. But since blackmail is a trade better left for the experts, events soon spiral out of everyone’s and anyone’s control, resulting in a non-stop series of hilarious encounters!
The Coens created the characters with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich and Richard Jenkins in mind. Pitt said he did not know how to play the part because the character was such an idiot: “There was a pause, and then Joel goes…’You’ll be fine’.”
Ethan Coen says that Pitt’s character was partially inspired by a commercial for which Pitt suffered a similar botched haircut and dye job. Tilda Swinton modelled her character’s hairdo on Edna Krabappel’s from The Simpsons.
Extras: Finding the Burn: The making of Burn After Reading; DC Insiders Run a Muck: An all-star cast creates the world of Washington, DC, insiders all trying to get ahead or find true love; Welcome Back, George: This comedy piece features Mr. Clooney as he returns for his third collaboration with Ethan and Joel.
