It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to report that Julee Cruise has passed away at the age of 65 years old. Her husband, Edward Grinnan, confirmed the news on Facebook on Thursday, writing, “I said goodbye to my wife, Julee Cruise, today. She left this realm on her own terms. No regrets. She is at peace.”
Cruise was known for her work with David Lynch. Her single “Falling” (the instrumental version written by composer Angelo Badalamenti) was used as the theme tune of Twin Peaks. She often cameoed singing throughout the series, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Twin Peaks: The Return. She also recorded a “Twin Peaks” version of the Psych theme tune for their Twin Peaks tribute episode “Duel Spires” (Season 5 Ep. 12).
She also collaborated with Lynch and Badalamenti for the movie Blue Velvet, which features her song “Mysteries of Love,” she noted at time:
“It’s like I’m his little sister: you don’t like your older brother telling you what to do,” Cruise reportedly said of her working relationship with Lynch. “David’s foppish. He can have these tantrums sometimes. And have you ever seen his temper? Anybody can look funny when they get mad. But I love him.”
Cruise also acted and sang in the off-Broadway cast of Return to the Forbidden Planet, and toured with The B-52’s as Cindy Wilson’s touring stand-in on and off from 1992 to 1999. She also performed regularly with Bobby McFerrin’s improvisational vocal group Voicestra/CircleSong.
