Written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, and directed by Akiva Schaffer, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a movie that came out of nowhere and shocked the world with its awesomeness. Taking the original cartoon show and spinning it on its head is a great way to go and, in this movie, we are quickly introduced to a world where humans and cartoons live together. In some ways it is Roger Rabbit (who does pop up along the way) for a new generation, but they take some huge steps forward with that world!
We witness Chip (John Mulaney) meeting Dale (Andy Samberg) in elementary school and become best friends and a comedy duo. This leads them to Hollywood where they work as extras until they get their own show Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers in the early 1990s. All is going well for them until Dale is offered his own show, Double-O-Dale. This leads to the two falling out and the cancellation of Rescue Rangers (Double-O-Dale was a pilot that did not get picked up). The two have not spoken since.
Jumping thirty years later to the modern day we find Dale (who has now had CGI surgery to update his look) working the convention circuit whilst Chip is an insurance salesman who has a dog and listens to Lamb of God on his headphones. Both are contacted by former Rescue Ranger Monterey Jack (Eric Bana) who is in trouble. Their meeting at his apartment is the first time they have seen each other in thirty years. Monterey Jack reveals that he has a stinky cheese addiction that has got out of control, and he now owes a lot of money to the evil Valley Gang. Monty fears he will be trafficked as when cartoon characters owe the Valley gang money, they are kidnapped have their appearances altered, and are shipped overseas to produce bootlegs of their works for the rest of their lives.
Later that night Chip and Dale are alerted to Monterey Jack’s disappearance. It is being investigated by Police Captain Putty (J. K. Simmons) and Officer Ellie Steckler (KiKi Layne). Steckler informs Chip and Dale that the Valley Gang are hard to investigate and suggests Chip and Dale investigate on their own…
Verdict: 8/10. A complete reimagining that works on so many levels. The more you watch it the more you will spot! Cameos from MC Skat Kat and Paula Abdul, Randy Marsh, Flounder, are just the beginning. The film also made a star of Ugly Sonic, and it would seem a spin off for him is a must! Darkwing Duck also crashes in at the end demanding his own film. Fun for all the family although the Sweet Pete “origin” is a little too close to real life!
