Worzel Gummidge: Guy Forks

Written, directed, and starring Mackenzie Crook, Worzel Gummidge: Guy Forks sees Worzel’s cousin, Guy Forks (Paul Kaye), has taken his rightful place at the top of the bonfire, but an argument between the old friends leads to a competition to prove who can do each other’s job better. Hopefully Earthy Mangold (Francesca Mills) can save the day!

Crook’s vision of Gummidge remains rooted in folklore and mystery and whilst not as gripping as some previous instalments manages to keep the charm and magic of his world alive. Paul Kaye’s role of Guy Forks adds an interesting dilemma for Worzel to overcome and Toby Jones’ multiple roles as The Village Committee perhaps says a lot kore about village life than initially intended!

Crook’s Gummidge has often received criticism by those comparing back to Pertwee‘s interpretation but he has made the show his own. By returning the show to the roots of Barbara Euphan Todd’s books we get a slow paced story the whole family can enjoy with a wide range of characters that are true to their original interpretations.

Verdict: 6/10. A fun jaunt around Scatterbrook Farm that has something in it for everyone to enjoy. I would have preferred a little more mystery and folklore (as seen in The Scarecrow of Scatterbrook) but I am still onboard with Crook’s vision and am excited where he will take it next.
