Sensation (2021)

Sensation is the new sci-fi thriller from director Martin Gorf. It follows lead character Andrew Cooper, as his life is turned upside down after being relocated to a facility to research his new found special abilities.

First off Sensation looks fantastic. There are moments when I truly believed I was watching a big budget blockbuster. The cinematography by Jamie Burr and director Martin Goff is just perfect in every frame. The scene with the safe was just beautiful to look at.

The plot just about hangs together through the films runtime. There are times where it feels the whole thing is about to fall over under its own weight, but somehow it manages to just stay on track.

Sensation is also a film that wears its influences proudly. There are moments that touch on The Matrix, Inception, and the X-Men franchise. These moments are glaringly obvious, but feel less like plagiarism and more like a fans homage.

The movie also has the feel of a TV show about it. The whole premise feels like it would have worked better as a two part mini-series. That’s not the criticism it sounds like; there is just something the whole feel of the film that lends itself more to the other format.

Game of Thrones alumni Eugene Simon gives a great central performance as lead character Andrew Cooper. He navigates the films twisting plot with ease. There is also strong support from Emily Wyatt, Jennifer Martin, and Marybeth Havens.

Sensation is only Martin Gorf’s second feature. Somehow this inexperienced director keeps this complex story together, but only just. This does however bode well for his future output.

Verdict: 7/10. Despite not being sensational Sensation is an enjoyable if slightly shaky and unoriginal experience.

Sensation arrive on Amazon Prime on April 16th 2021.
