Classic sci-fi adventure Journey to the Far Side of the Sun was written and produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The pair made some of the most popular children’s TV shows of the 60s including cult classics Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. Journey to the Far Side of the Sun was their first major live-action production. It stars Roy Thinnes (The Invaders), Ian Hendry, Lynn Loring, Patrick Wymark, Loni von Friedl, and Herbert Lom.
It’s 2069 and two astronauts are sent to uncover the secrets of a “duplicate” Earth on the other side of the sun. When they crash land three weeks earlier than they had planned, they must embark on a life-or-death mission to determine whether they have arrived back home or on the strange mirror world.
Filmed in 1969 Journey to the Far Side of the Sun was originally released in Europe under the title Doppelgänger. A telecine operator in the 1980s who was unfamiliar with the film believed that the scenes set on the Counter-Earth had been wrongly reversed. They inverted them to correct the supposed error causing some TV broadcasts of the film to be shown with a flopped picture.
Ian Hendry and Patrick Wymark liked a drink so filming of their their trickier scenes had to be done in the mornings before they went for a liquid lunch.
