Vere-Jones lived with his wife Sue and his two children, Benjamin and Emma. In 1989, he was diagnosed with bowel cancer, which was documented in a television documentary called Crisis: One Man’s Fight. He later made a full recovery.
Vere-Jones was a long time collaborator with Peter Jackson and appeared in Braindead, Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He also played Zeus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and King Silvus in Xena: Warrior Princess. He also appeared in Legend of the Seeker, The Knock, Revelations, The Legend of William Tell, The Adventures of Swiss Family Robinson, Fallout, Shortland Street, and Children of Fire Mountain amongst others, In 2002, Vere-Jone was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.
