Ted talks. In fact Ted swears like a m*therfucker. And he drinks, smokes weed and uses prostitutes. Ted is a soft toy, brought to life by a shooting star and a magical wish, who causes chaos for his owner/best friend double Oscar nominee Marky Mark (The Departed, The Fighter, The Funky Bunch).
Ted is voiced by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane who also directed and wrote the film.
When Marky Mark read the first 35 pages of the script he said “This is either going to be brilliant, or it’s going to be awful.” After talking to MacFarlane he decided to take a chance. Ted went on to gross over $500 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million and won Best Comedy at the Empire Awards.
Being a Catholic, Marky Mark felt a bit guilty about the film. While hosting the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in 2015, which was attended by Pope Francis he found himself apologizing to him for it (albeit jokingly).
Seth MacFarlane co-wrote the opening theme “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” – sung by Norah Jones. The song was later nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 85th Academy Awards.
MacFarlane was served with a lawsuit from the producers of a series of internet videos called Charlie the Abusive Teddy Bear in 2014. Ted largely matched the background story, persona, voice tone, attitude, and dialogue of Charlie bear but the suit was dismissed with prejudice in 2015, after the plaintiffs conceded Ted was independently created and withdrew the suit.
