It’s not everything I’d have asked for and not really what I was expecting, but, Star Wars – The Rise of Skywalker is getting the nod of approval from me.
I’m not going to be a swine and spoil any of it this early, but I do have to say something to anyone else still feeling battered and bruised by TLJ.
To be clear, it isn’t the movie our inner 8-year-olds still dream up today, it never could be, everyone’s old or dead. Get that out the way before you go in and, if you’re anything like me, you’re going to enjoy this movie. People around me clapped!
You’ll laugh, you’ll cheer, you’ll probably groan or roll your eyes at least once too, but… you’re not going to leave that cinema angry this time, I promise you. In fact, I left the cinema with a massive grin on my face and it’s been a very long time since that happened after a Star Wars movie.
I’m going to leave it here. Partly because I want to go and think it all through and partly because I just want to curl up and have a big cry. Not because of anything specific in the plot, more because JJ has found a way to create a Star Wars film that kept me guessing and entertained me, whilst simultaneously reminding me of some of the happiest memories I have from my childhood. For that, I’m grateful.
Verdict: 8/10. If your inner 8-year-old needs closure too, go see this movie.
