The 1980’s produced so much great fantasy based horror; don’t get me wrong there was a lot of crap too, but much of what was great have gone down as cult classics.
For those who have caught the last two seasons of Under the Flowers may well be starting to feel this is going to go the same way. I myself was a big fan and when I heard that season 3 was in production I felt excited.
So when the link arrived I eagerly clicked and immersed writer and directors Richard T. Wilson’s world….
Starting with a quote from a poem and a voice over there was a moment I thought I had clicked on the wrong link and was watching a Manic Street Preachers video; soon though I was back in the Under the Flowers universe.
At just over twenty minutes in total it’s a roller coaster ride with a genuine feeling of jeopardy. It almost feels as if no one is safe and that it could end badly for any of the leads at any moment.
Well written and directed throughout it must have been hard to, with the short running time, not make the season feel rushed. The actors also make great use of their screen time; throughout their dialogue feels natural and the performances are all worthy of praise.
The visual FXs are lovely and dream like. In the review for season 2 I remarked on their Disney like feel. This is certainly still true in season 3, but there is other influences shining through to. For example the snow-scapes remind me of Paul Fedor’s work on the video for the Evanescence song Lithium and the burning corpses take me back to 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
