Shang-Chi movie next for Marvel?

Deadline has revealed that Marvel Studios is fast-tracking an adaptation of the Shang-Chi comics character for a feature film franchise, which will mark the studio’s first Asian protagonist.

Asian-American Dave Callaham, whose credits range from The Expendables to creating the TV series Jean-Claude Van Johnson to co-writing Wonder Woman 1984, has been tapped to write the screenplay. Marvel is also reportedly already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who could take the helm, looking towards Black Panther as the model.

The character of Shang-Chi was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin and was conceived in late 1972. Marvel had wished to acquire the rights to adapt the Kung Fu television program, but were denied permission by the show’s owner. He debuted in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973.  Shang-Chi is an extraordinary master of numerous unarmed and weaponry-based wushu styles, including the use of the gun, nunchaku and jian. He later, upon joining the Avengers, ultimately gains the power to create countless duplicates of himself.
