It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to report that David Margulies passed away last Monday at the age of 78 years old. He is survived by his partner, actress Lois Smith, as well as a son and grandson by his marriage, which ended in divorce. The sad news was reported by , his agent Mary Harden. No cause of death has been released.
The Brooklyn-born Margulies made his Broadway debut in the 1973 revival of The Iceman Cometh. He performed on Broadway a dozen more times, including as Roy Cohn in Angels in America.
He played the mayor of New York in 1984’s Ghostbusters, as well as its 1989 sequel. He also appeared in many films such as 9 1/2 Weeks (1986), Ishtar (1987), and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), Most recently, he had roles in JC Chandor’s A Most Violent Year and John Turturro’s Fading Gigolo. His numerous TV stints included Kojak, Tales from the Darkside, Spenser: For Hire, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Chicago Hope, NYPD Blue, Northern Exposure, Touched by an Angel, Law & Order, and he played Tony Soprano’s lawyer, Neil Mink, on The Sopranos.
