Doctor Who – 9.8: THE ZYGON INVERSION

Last weeks episode, ‘The Zygon Invasion’, was so good it was hard to imagine they could keep up the quality over both parts of the story. Surely not, that’s just not the modern ‘Who’ way. Oh yes they did.

In many ways ‘The Zygon Inversion’ was very different to the previous episode. Whereas that episode was fast paced and full of set pieces; this one lingered on scenes and let the dialogue to all the work. Jenna Coleman created a tense interrogation / confrontation between Clara and Bonnie. Making each part so distinct you almost forgot they were played by the same actress. Claras imprisonment within a room in her own mind was similar to her appearance, as Oswin Oswald, in ‘Asylum if the Daleks’. But this felt less like a rehashed plot and more like a welcome reference. Last week Peter Capaldi seemed to take a step back and let the other actors shine. This week it was his turn. He effortlessly command ever scene he is in. To the point he is missed when not in a scene. The speech he gave as Bonnie and Kate Stewart’s hands hovered above the ‘Osgood Boxes’ was spine tingling. Very reminiscent of a Tom Baker or Christopher Eccleston era monologue.

If this was Capaldi’s episode then Ingrid Oliver’s Osgood nearly stole it without even trying. An intelligent, strong well written and acted addition to the ‘Who’ universe she would make a great companion. Unfortunately Steven Moffat has said that she won’t be. Please remember though when it comes to the future story arc of ‘Doctor Who’ Moffat always lies.

Like ‘The Zygon Invasion’ we were again faced with a plot that twisted and turned. Sadly the only criticism you could throw ‘The Zygon Inversion’ that these twists weren’t as successful or surprising as last weeks. This may have been due to the fact that through familiarity we were just more aware. The Kate Stewart twist of pretending to be a ‘Zygon’ did feel a tad lazy though.

It was nice to hear previous companion Harry Sullivan’s name mentioned in full this time. It was also nice to see that the Doctors description of him ‘imbecile’ hasn’t changed since the 1975 Tom Baker episode ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’.

So once again one of the best stories of the modern ‘Who’ era. So much so that you feel in twenty years time this will be one of those stories that the new ‘Whovians’ will seek out. Much the same way those who are new to the Doctors universe seek out ‘Genesis of the Daleks’, ‘Cave of Andronzani’, ‘City of Death’, etc, etc, etc.

Rating out of 10: 9.5
