Cult Faction is sad to report the passing of our fave Goonies mum Mary Ellen Trainor. It is being reported by Kathleen Kennedy (fellow San Diego State alum and Lucasfilm president) that Trainor died May 20 at her home in Montecito, California.
As well as The Goonies, Trainor also played Dr. Stephanie Woods (a LAPD psychiatrist) in all four Lethal Weapon movies, Diane Evans in Roswell, Eve Lukens in Relativity, and Judy Lewis in Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.
Early television appearances included Cheers, Crazy Like A Fox, Remington Steele, then she met and fell in love with Robert Zemeckis and married him in 1980.
At the suggestion of Michael Douglas, Trainor made her big screen debut in the pivotal role of Elaine, the kidnapped sister of Kathleen Turner’s character, in the director’s Romancing the Stone (1984). She and her husband later collaborated on Back to the Future Part II (1989), Death Becomes Her (1992) and the Oscar best-picture winner Forrest Gump (1994) before they divorced in 2000.
She made a very memorable appearance on Tales From The Crypt in the episode “And All Through The House:”
Further film roles included TV news reader Gail Wallens in Die Hard (1988), a role she would play again in the film Ricochet (1991) with Denzil Washington.
