The Spoon family – Mr Spoon, Mrs Spoon, Tina-Tea Spoon and Eggbert live on Junk Planet. Everyday Mr Spoon flies off in his spaceship to Button Moon. Button Moon is a fantasy moon, a yellow button, shining in Blanket sky – a sky full of stars and fantastic happenings. Mr Spoon takes with him his telescope to see what he can see.
Ian Allen originally wrote Button Moon as a stage show for his company Playboard Puppets in 1978. The company was later approached by the producers of children’s series Rainbow, who were interested in it becoming a recurring story feature for the programme. Instead, Thames Television commissioned a full series of Button Moon and the show ran from December 1980 to December 1988. The theme tune was written and performed by Doctor Who actor Peter Davison and his then wife Sandra Dickinson.
Playboard Puppets made frequent appearances on TV programmes and commercials including Playschool, Rainbow, T-Bag, Not the Nine O’Clock News, The Morecambe and Wise Show, That’s Life, Spitting Image and Drop the Dead Donkey. Film contributions included The Muppets, The Dark Crystal and The Muppets Christmas Carol.
In 2013 Button Moon featured on BBC One fly-on-the-wall documentary The Sheriffs Are Coming in relation to Ian Allen being awarded £3,736 in damages for copyright infringement when unlicensed Button Moon designs were copied on to T-shirts and mugs.
Ian Allen still has many of the original sets and puppets from the TV series and theatre shows. They are part of a collection of puppets and props owned by The Button Moon Trust, a charity that Allen established in 2015 (and for which Peter Davison is a patron) which uses puppetry to help disadvantaged children and support animal welfare charities.
