The Lazarus Project Episode 1

In a TV land full of sliders, leapers, groundhoggers, and tunnelers it always takes something special to come out that can stand alongside previous works. The Lazarus Project could be one of those shows if it just lets itself enjoy the moment.

On July 1, 2022, we meet George (Paapa Essiedu), a man out to secure a bank loan so he can fund a new app he’s developing. A few weeks later, his girlfriend Sarah (Charly Clive) tells him she’s pregnant. Suddenly they are married, and all is going well apart from some new virus killing the world in the background. It is pretty much the end of the world when suddenly everything goes Groundhog Day, and it is July 1st again!

You see George discovers he is a mutant who has the ability to relive moments of time again (and of course correct any errors). He is soon recruited by Archie (Anjli Mohindra) to The Lazrus Project led by Wes (Caroline Quentin). The Lazarus Project controls a reset point that resets time back to July 1st. They can then course correct any issues the world has had in between as long as it a full-on global disaster. They will not interfere otherwise.

The first episode concludes with George’s usual actions being interrupted and something tragic happening.

Verdict: 7/10. Whilst well-acted and scripted it seems The Lazurus Project is too scared to enjoy itself. This may change as the series develops though. You do get deep emotional explorations of the events that unfold but it would be nice to be able to catch your breath and digest them before moving on to the next event in the storyline. There are bags of potential here that hopefully do not get caught up and buried in a show that should be empowering its genre to a new audience.
