She-Ra debuted in 1985, two years after the cultural phenomenon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe premiered, coming about in response to Mattel and Filmation discovering that 30 percent of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe audience consisted of girls. He-Man’s twin sister She-Ra was created to satisfy this demand for a female fantasy character and was intended as competition to Mattel’s main toy line – Barbie. As a competitor in the same company She-Ra could be used to boost Barbie’s sales.

Despite being part of the ever masculine He-Man line, officially She-Ra was considered to be a “fashion action doll” by Mattel, leaving stores confused whether to place her near Barbie or among the action figures.
She-Ra’s preference was for peace over violence. Broadcast standards at the time greatly limited the amount of force both She-Ra and He-Man were allowed to use. They could react defensively but not offensively, and it was better for them to fight robotic enemies rather than human ones and to outsmart these foes with intelligence.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe – The Complete Series and She-Ra: Princess of Power – The Complete series are both being released on 25th April 2022 by Fabulous Films.
In September 2021 it was announced that a She-Ra live-action series is in early development as a collaboration between Amazon Studios and Dreamworks Animation.
