Hawkeye finally hits Disney+ after what seems like forever, and it is safe to say it does not let the audience down. Opening back during 2012’s Battle of New York we see a young Kate Bishop’s (Clara Stack) apartment being destroyed resulting in the death of her father. Kate looks on from the wreckage and as a Chitauri approaches he is taken out by Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). It appears Hawkeye is unaware he saved Kate as he is soon gone as the battle rages on.
We then jump to the present day where Hawkeye aka Clint Barton has taken his kids to New York for a Christmas trip. Part of the trip is a visit to the theatre to watch Rogers: The Musical. Clint is not a big fan!
Meanwhile an older Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) has been kicked out of her private school and is attending a charity auction gala with her mother Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) and learns that she is engaged to Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton). During the evening Kate stumbles on a black-market auction taking place at same gala. She spies Jack and his uncle Armand Duquesne III (Simon Callow) at the auction bidding on Ronin’s sword. Unfortunately, the Tracksuit Mafia raid the auction in search of a watch. Kate puts on the Ronin suit and fights them off, managing to rescue a stray dog in the process.
Upon seeing Ronin being reported on the news, Barton sets out to investigate…
As far as the first episode goes, Steinfeld seems to thrive in the role of Kate Bishop and is a welcome addition to the MCU. Whilst Renner gets to show more sides of Hawkeye off to the audience and it is welcome. Having to criminally take a back seat through some of his MCU time it is about time we got to see what Hawkeye is really about.
The chemistry between Renner and Steinfeld is aplenty, and I look forward to seeing how that develops over the series. It helps keep the tone and vision of the series together as chaotic events unfold around them,
Verdict: 8/10. An excellent entry into the MCU that may just give it a kick up the ass as it moves into its next phase.
