Jenny Zero #1 (of 4)

Jenny Zero comes form the team of Dave Dwonch (Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab, Mind Palace), Brock McKinney (MAD Magazine, Full Moon Deadly Ten films), Megan Huang, and Magenta King and immediately invokes memories of Ultraman, Kaiju movies and everything in between thanks to the Action Science Police advert that opens the issue.

We are then quickly introduced to Jenny Tetsuo, the daughter of beloved superhero, Mega Commander Zero. Now it seems Jenny has put in her time with the Action Science Police in the past but has since left it all behind. Hints of expectations on young shoulders are hinted at alongside her own self perceptions of not living up to the hero her father was. All these things it would seem, resulted in her walking away from everything and adopting a hard drinking and partying lifestyle with her hotel heiress and publicist best friend, Dana Sheraton and her boyfriend/drug dealer Jemal.

Jenny’s past does not remain there though as an imminent danger results in Action Science Police needing Jenny’s help and soon the hung over, but still drinking kaiju killer is back on the case once more, and soon she has a big shock due to some of her brash actions!

Verdict: 9/10. This four-issue mini-series starts with a solid character study of Jenny Tetsuo and presents some foreshadowing of what is to come as well as helps us understand just why Jenny has become the person she is. This is a darker in tone look at at the Ultraman/Super Sentai world that we often see in bright shiny television shows and contains a sarcastic tone thanks to Jenny’s experiences in that world. Instead, we get to see what happens to the hero when there are no monsters around. Jenny Zero is going to take us to familiar places but provide us with a whole new (drunken) perspective on them. It is a comic that deserves to be on your pull list and is only going to get bigger and better.
