Solar Opposites Ep. 1: The Matter Transfer Array

Solar Opposites -- Episode 101 -- The Matter Transfer Array -- Uh oh! Korvo and Terry make a Funbucket real while the replicants deal with a school bully. (Photo courtesy of FOX)

Created by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, Solar Opposites Ep. 1: The Matter Transfer Array takes place one year after aliens Korvo (voiced by Roiland), Terry (Thomas Middleditch), and their child-replicants Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone), Jesse (Mary Mack) and their pet Pupa (Sagan McMahan) crashland on Earth following their escape from the destruction of their planet own planet Shlorp.

Korvo hates Earth and is determined to repair their spaceship and get them away, but then Terry introduces him to the television show Funbucket (voiced by Rob Schrab). Korvo thinks Funbucket is aweesome and wants to meet him. They go to a mall where Funbucket is appearing and discover he is not real and is just a man in a suit. Disheartened theycreate their own Funbucket who later ditches them for Travis and Avery.

Meanwhile, Yumyulack and Jesse are made to attend High School where they are bullied by their classmates and the etaching staff. Afetr one confrontation Yumyulack shrinks a bully named Lydia (Gideon Adlon), hoping to use her to study human behavior. When she threatens to go to the authorities, they attempt to lobotomise her- Terry then pours soda on Lydia’s exposed brain, erasing her memory!

Gutted at their rejection, Korvo and Terry create another Funbucket who comes out all mutatted and damaged. The two funbuckets end up fusing together and smashing up the city! Korvo and Terry manage to shrink Funbucket and just as they prepare to kill him, Travis and Avery take him away instead.

Verdict: 8/10. Stepping out from the shadow of Rick and Morty is a tough move. Many shows suffered due to comparisons to their creators other works (Simpsons/Futurama, Family Guy/American Dad) but Solar Opposites seems to dive headfirst out of the shadows rather than step! The pace is constant, the jokes are constant (including some great visual gags if you watch carefully) and so are the laughs. This could be the next big thing in adult animation, and now it is available on both sides of the Atlantic I’m sure we will see that happen!
