Master filmmaker Martin Scorsese brings heart-pounding suspense to one of the most acclaimed thrillers of all time. Starring Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange, Nick Nolte and Juliette Lewis, Cape Fear has visually stunning images, brilliant performances and relentless psychological torment.
Fourteen years after being imprisoned, vicious psychopath Max Cady (Robert De Niro) emerges with a single-minded mission: to seek revenge on his attorney Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Cady becomes a terrifying presence as he menacingly circles Bowden’s increasingly unstable family. Realising he is legally powerless to protect his beautiful wife Leigh (Jessica Lange) and his troubled teenage daughter Danielle (Juliette Lewis), Sam resorts to unorthodox measures which lead to an unforgettable showdown on Cape Fear.
Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct the film but he traded it to Martin Scorsese for the rights to Schindler’s List. Spielberg said he “wasn’t in the mood” to make a movie about a “maniac” and Scorsese was apprehensive about making Schindler’s List after the controversy surrounding his previous two films, Goodfellas and The Last Temptation of Christ.
Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis were both nominated for Academy and Golden Globe Awards for their portrayals in the film.
To make Max Cady more menacing De Niro paid a doctor $5,000 to grind his teeth down for the role, he then paid $20,000 to have his teeth restored after shooting had finished.
De Niro was also tattooed with vegetable dyes, which faded after a few months.
Actors who were in the original 1962 Cape Fear have cameos in the film, including Robert Mitchum who played Max Cady in the original and Gregory Peck (in what would be his final film) who had played Sam Bowden.
