Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Ep. 1: That Hope Is You (Part 1)

What sets this Star Trek series apart from its predecessors is that it never fails to reinvent itself, it’s like the Madonna of Star Trek. The end of Season Two had an all-out intergalactic battle that culminated in Discovery escaping the clutches of Control by flying through a wormhole into the unknown.

This series starts with the first episode with regard from Burnham’s perspective, what happened to her after the wormhole and where she ended up.  A new character is introduced, Cleveland “Book” Booker, a “Courier”, an occupation that has many possibilities for further episodes I can imagine. In this episode we learn that an event called “The Burn” occurred between Burnham and Discovery time travelling and the time that Burnham arrived in. The Burn is where most of the Galaxy’s dilithium crystals exploded taking most of Starfleet with it and that the United Federation of Planets has fallen.  I did not see that coming I must admit, quite a shock.  The episode concludes with Burnham being introduced to a Federation liaison character called Sahil whose only purpose in life was to meet a Starfleet Officer, on an old, abandoned Federation space station.

The episode is not without its faults, although the perfect constant that is the movie budget for a tv show and the excellent cinematography and excellent casting are the plusses.  The story might need a pinch of salt and sip of wine as it has its weaknesses but I am being picky.  This is a great starter to the third season and reverting to my comment of the series reinventing itself, this series will have a new antagonist and a new storyline that will totally be different from its predecessor series.  I cannot wait.

Verdict: 7/10, I found this to be the rather coolest and laid-back start to a Discovery season.  Some of the scenes did not really add up but, with the first two seasons, not much does add up until the culmination of the series when you find yourself going “oh yeah, that’s why they did that early on”.  I still think that the cast are amazing and perfectly cast for this.
