Bill and Ted Face The Music (2020)

It was written in the future that the music of Wyld Stallyns would unite the world and bring peace to the universe. It would appear after everything that has happened this year Bill and Ted are back to do just that!

It was back in 1989 when Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure burst onto the scene. This was followed up two years later by Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. In both films the non-judgemental optimistic mind sets of Bill S. Preston Esq. and Ted “Theodore” Logan spread upbeat positivity to all those who watched it. The problem is, just like in the film, the world is a lot darker place than it was at the last Wyld Stallyns concert. Can they do it again?

To help us original writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon (who always cameo in Bill and Ted movies. This time they are demons in hell) are back and so are Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves. This time Bill and Ted are having trouble writing that song that will save the universe and all reality. Also their Princess wives are not happy  and their daughters, Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving) have grown up but have no direction apart from music.

One day Rufus’ (George Carlin) daughter Kelly (Kristen Schaal) arrives in a brand-new time machine with an important message: their band Wyld Stallyns has until 7:17pm San Dimas time to save the universe and all reality through that perfect song they were supposed to have written some time in the last 20 years. Bill and Ted decide to cheat and use a time machine to do it. Nothing could go wrong could it?

The film is a packed feel good adventure that keeps Bill and Ted at the centre of the story whilst allowing the rest of the cast get to have their own moments on the big screen. Lundy-Paine and Weaving step up as Billie and Thea and I am guessing we may see their own adventures at some point. Take note Hollywood – this is how you introduce female versions of charachters…  *cough* Ghostbusters. The Princesses also had their own side quest – perhaps we could have seen more of it on screen though? I’m hoping for some bluray extras on that one. There are also a lot of new charcters to enjoy too including Dennis Caleb McCoy (Anthony Carrigan).

One big plus for me was the amount of easter eggs that were packed in. My personal favourite being a bill board near the end. keep your eyes peeled! I’m sure this will pay off even more with repeated viewings.

Was Bill and Ted Face The Music a game changing cinematic moment? No, but that does not mean you cannot enjoy it. The positivity is still there and that is something the whole world needs right now.

Verdict: 7.5. Bill and Ted Face The Music is like catching up with old friends you have not seen in decades. A lot has changed and some things aren’t always how you would like them, but it is still amazing to see them one more time.
