Ava (2020)

Directed by Tate Taylor, Ava (Jessica Chastain) is a deadly assassin who works for a black ops organization, traveling the globe specialising in disposing of high profile targets. She is faultless until one day a hit job goes badly wrong resulting on her boss, Duke (John Malkovich) ordering her to go on “gardening” (ie>forced) leave. With all this new free time on her hands Ava decides to visit Boston, her old pre-assassin stomping grounds, for the first time in eight years.

We then get a paradigm shift from action flick to (unnecessary and plot irrelevant) family dramaas we learn Ava once had a boyfriend (Common) who is now friendly with her sister whilst her mother (Geena Davis) seems unhappy to see her due to Ava’s unresolved issues with her now dead father. Not one plot thread is drawn from any of this!

Eventually Ava sorts out her problems with her enemies but to little avail or care from the audience. Interest had been lost a long time ago.

Verdict: 5. It would seem all of Ava’s budget went on casting and whilst those in the film play their roles well their is little for them to get their teeth into. Instead we are left with a movie that is basically a driftwood. It gets there in the end but you have probably stopped caring when it does.

A huge thanks to Filmtett for its help in reviewing this movie.
