“Coffin Joe” José Mojica Marins passes away aged 83

It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to announce that Coffin Joe himself, the horror maestro José Mojica Marins, has passed away at the age of 83 years old in São Paulo, Brazil. He passed away due to bronchopneumonia after being hospitalised for over twenty days. Marins is best known for creating and portraying Coffin Joe, a character who is considered a horror icon, a Brazilian cultural icon, and a cult figure. Coffin Joe is an amoral undertaker with Nietzschian philosophies and a hatred for organized religion. The character had his own trilogy of movies known nowadays as The Coffin Joe Trilogy.

The films followed Coffin Joe on his homicidal quest to find “the perfect woman” so he can achieve metaphorical immortality by having a son. The first film, At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul came out in 1964. This was followed up in 1967 with This Night I’ll Possess Your Corpse and then Coffin Joe would return one last time in 2008’s Embodiment of Evil. Coffin Joe’s popularity would transcend the movies into comic books, music videos and in other ways.

Outside of horror, Marins created exploitation, drugsploitation, sexploitation, and Western movies. Marins is noted for his low-budget film style, often using friends and amateur actors as cast and crew. His films are usually set in São Paulo, Brazil.
