Zombie Tidal Wave (2019)

Directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, Zombie Tidal Wave aims to pick up where the Sharknado franchise left off. More serious in tone, the film plays more like the original Sharknado before it became a cameo driven laugh fest. Will Zombie Tidal Wave become that next big thing only time will tell, but they are off to a good start.

Before we go any further it is important to establish that this is not a big budget Hollywood masterpiece and thus does not need to be judged as such. You know what you are getting with this especially when the key concept of the movie surrounds Zombies who emerge from a crack within the earth’s crust deep on the Ocean floor via a tidal wave!

Ian Ziering takes the lead as Hunter Shaw and remains the solid B-Movie lead he was throughout the Sharknado series but all the best lines are stolen by Shelton Jolivette’s Ray McCray who becomes the best thing about the movie. The rest of the cast provide solid support especially burdened Sheriff Kameo Akoni played by Erich Chikashi Linzbichler.

Is the plot the most layered and complex? Of course not! That’s what adds to the fun of the film. Are there hints of Lucio Fulci’s legendary Zombi 2? (aka Zombie Flesheaters) Well yes there are. The inclusion of a band in the movie called The Fulci’s is a nice touch confirming their influences.

VERDICT: 5.5 /10. A solid entertaining movie that does what is says on the tin. If you are watching a film called Zombie Tidal Wave you know what to expect and you will not be disappointed. Guts, gore, fighting, tension and some awesome one liners along the way help launch what hopefully will be the next big B-Movie franchise.
