This could be the end of Spider-Man in the MCU! It has been announced that Sony has officially ended their “Spider-Man” agreement with Disney. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will no longer be involved in any further Spider-Man films.
Deadline revealed that Disney and Sony have been locked in re-negotiating the terms of their unprecedented Marvel deal for the last few months but have been unable to come to an agreement.
Deadline exclusively revealed that Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony turned that offer down flat and didn’t return to the negotiating table.
Sony then apparently responded by wanting to keep the arrangement going under the current terms where Marvel receives in the range of 5% of first dollar gross, sources said. Disney opted to refuse.
The original terms of the agreement saw Disney obtain creative control and merchandise rights, as well as being able to include Spidey in other MCU films. Sony meanwhile retained all profits earned from the box office in addition to final cut privileges.
There is a chance that these deals could still be ironed out but at this time it would seem that Spider-Man is no longer part of the MCU.
