Doctor Who – Resolution

For years now steampunk Dalek’s have been confined to Comic Cons, which seems unfair since the Cyberman version appeared in 2008’s ‘The Next Doctor’, but now in 2019 they finally get to make their appearance (kind of anyway).

So here it is the first (stand alone) ‘Doctor Who’ New Years Day special. For those opposed to the casting of Jodie Whittaker this was further evidence of the shows demise; for those in favour a symbolic part of the new era. For me in was just the producers were probably struggling to keep coming up with Christmas stories and the network thought the show would get a larger audience share on New Years.

The story saw a Dalek divided in three in the ninth century reform after one part was excavated at an archaeological dig and accidentally revived.   In the classic era it was quite rare to see a Dalek away from its casing, but with modern CGI this has become a more common event. The Dalek attaches itself to archaeologist ‘Lin’ and sets out to build itself a new casing to help it conquer the world. The casing in question is a mixture of recovered Dalek technology and spare parts welded together in an ‘A-Team’ style montage scene.

‘Resolutions’ mix of horror and action worked well together. Seeing the Dalek’s tentacle inside of ‘Lin’s’ neck was truly horrifying and her possession agonising to watch. The action sequences worked well. The speeding car was very reminiscent of the 80’s action genre. The battle between the Dalek and army was also well done, except the number of soldiers sent was a little underwhelming.

Humour has played a major part on series 11 and ‘Resolution’ did not disappoint. The one-liners landed throughout and the scene with the unhelpful call centre was like something from the mind of Graham Lineham. The payoff being that U.N.I.T has become the victim of BREXIT and possibly the worldwide rise of nationalist politics. Fingers crossed for the return of U.N.I.T at some point in the future.

The episode was not without its faults. At times the pacing seemed a little off and direction clunky. This was mainly due to the plot being explained at every opportunity. Plot explanation is a common occurrence in the Who-verse, it is a family show so it’s mainly for the kids, but here it seemed overused.

As a side note I would love them to make a spinoff episode that shows the battle between the Dalek and the ninth century inhabitants of Britain.

As the only episode of this year and being Jodie’s first special ‘Resolution’ had a lot of pressure on it. Although it didn’t fully live up to its potential it was still an entertaining ride. It’s going to be a long wait until series 12 in 2020.

Rated out of 10: 7.5
