Ugly Sweater Party (2018)

Ugly Sweater Party tells the story of Cliff and Jodie, two best friends who go to a Christmas party at a Bible camp in the hopes of hooking up with twins they had met prior. While there Cliff is possessed by a demonic sweater forcing him to commit murder in order to transform into a demonic creature fully.

If that sounds like nonsense that’s because it is nonsense. Fun nonsense though.

Right away this film throws you into it with the sweater’s prior owner, a serial killer, being interrogated by two police officers. One of these decides to twist the killers testicles which really is a sign of the craziness to come. The performances feel right at home in this kind of film and the humour is occasionally funny. The jokes aren’t world class but the real humour comes from the interactions between characters. The actors and people involved feel like they are having fun with the script and story and it really helps improve the experience.

The cinematography is not the greatest but I feel that may be a product of budgetary constraints as many of the films qualities are. The special effects look appropriately corny, but I feel that if given the proper resources the crew involved could make a solid, good film. It is hard for any film made on such a micro budget to look good, but if leant into the way this film does it can make for a fun, enjoyable experience. The blatant satirization of horror tropes displayed makes for a self-aware borderline parody project that near anyone can enjoy.

Verdict: Most of these issues are resultant of the lack of budget and not the fault of the filmmakers. Overall, I thought this film was good but if given a proper budget and equipment the people behind this could make a great film. 6/10
