Review: Doctor Who – Smile (Series 10 Ep. 2)

It could have been a disaster, a story about killer robots ho communicate via emojis; it could have been this seasons ‘Sleep No More’ or even worse ‘Love & Monsters’. Thankfully it was another strong episode to follow last weeks series opener ‘The Pilot’.

Whereas last week saw ‘Doctor Who’ being influenced by Japanese horror; this weeks episode was like a family friendly version of Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’. It was a twisting, and at time twisted, story that weaved to an unexpected conclusion.

As with last week Pearl Mackie’s companion ‘Bill’ continues to be fun and extremely likable. I hope the rumours aren’t true and she remains an companion post Peter Capaldi’s regeneration. There was a nice moment involving her ‘Bill’ being shut in the ‘TARDIS’ much like Billie Piper’s ‘Rose’ is in the ‘Parting of the Ways’.

Again there was Easter Eggs to enjoy. Including the moments in the spaceship having a touch of the Peter Davison era story ‘Earthshock’ about them. This helped give the episode a slight feel of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ whilst still remaining contemporary.

It’s a shame Peter Capaldi is leaving. His version of the ‘Doctor’ just keeps getting better. Despite the naysayers the first two episodes have increased audience share on series nine (which matched Matt Smith’s numbers) and continues to be popular on I-Player. It’s seems stupid the tabloids just can’t seem to get past the age thing.

If the first two episodes are anything to go by we could be in for a treat of a series. I can’t wait until next week for ‘Thin Ice’.
