Between Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and the upcoming Wonder Woman, DCÂ could have introduced a number of female characters that at this point we would be excited at seeing team up, but that would involve planning and not knee jerk reactions. Instead we get Gotham City Sirens based around Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and what other female characters they discover when the finally open a comic book.
Suicide Squad director David Ayer appears to be leading the project which surprises me based on the apparent interference he got in the editing room – if such a room exists in the DC film offices. The Hollywood Reporter states he has signed on to take the helm of Gotham City Sirens, which will, “showcase the top female villains from the DC stable.” Who those will be remains to be seen, but Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn.
Robbie is also executive producing the movie and DC Films bosses Geoff Johns and Jon Berg will serve as producers.
It is clear that DC Films are now going the Harley Quinn route and now want more characters like her. I wish they would just look at the Deadpool movie. What made it successful was not the ‘R’ rating – it was the fact it stayed true to the source material. It respected and trusted it and guess what? People who liked Deadpool liked it! Then it spread and everyone loved it. Non-comic readers loved it.
DC’s failure to grasp this means we will now get any female character they can think of pimped out on the big screen and to mass media merchandise. The ones that stick might get a spin off. The one’s that do not were only there to show “the depth of characters anyway.” Why not go and have a look at the popular stories? Birds of Prey maybe? DC you have a successful TV universe to also explore – please do not be so blatantly obvious with your grasping of straws when it comes to your film universe.
Of course I would love to be proved wrong…
Can’t wait! Only one I haven’t cosplayed is the cat lol.
