Sausage Party (2016)

In an over-saturated animation market fueled by Disney and Pixar, Sausage Party raises the bar and provides its audience with something fresh and filthy. The Sausage Party universe centres around a supermarket called Shopwell’s where all the foods, drinks and groceries perceive the humans who buy them as gods who take them to “the great beyond” when they are chosen/purchased (similar to Toy Story’s Aliens and the claw).

We meet a hot dog named Frank (Seth Rogen) who has dreams of living in the great beyond with his hot dog bun girlfriend, Brenda (Kristin Wiig). Frank and Brenda’s packages are chosen by a human to leave Shopwell’s, but en route they are warned by a returned jar of honey mustard (Danny McBride) that the great beyond is a lie!

An accident during their trip to the registers causes a collision that leads to Frank, Brenda, a lavash named Kareem (David Krumholtz), a bagel named Sammy (Edward Norton), and an aggressive douche (Nick Kroll) falling out of the shopping cart. Douche’s nozzle is damaged, for which he blames Frank. After being discarded by Darren (Paul Rudd), the store manager, he swears revenge on Frank and Brenda.

Initially I was worried that Sausage Party might be a one trick pony that once the novelty of swearing had worn off would leave a paper thin plot and a few set pieces. Instead when the swearing runs thin (and it does at times) you are left with a movie a movie that questions the beliefs you hold, organised religion, purpose in life, self-perception and self-esteem. In some ways Sausage Party is reminiscent of films like Soylent Green, The Island, Logan’s Run and even a sprinkling of the original Planet of the Apes in the way it deconstructs a society’s beliefs.

Sausage Party is a fun film that will offend some: don’t go in for this if you are easily offended! Under all the offence though is a clever story that does actually challenge people and the views they hold. The added twist on the end adds to this further (as well as sets up a sequel?).

Verdict: 8/10 – Sausage Party gives you a lot of meat to play with.
