Doctor Who – 9.10: FACE THE RAVEN

It’s always hard to say goodbye. We watched Rose being trapped in another universe, Martha giving it all to help her family, Donna lose the memory of her time with Rory and Amy being trapped in the past for true love. However sad these goodbyes were we always knew they were safe, could be brought back and alive. So now we have Clara the first companion death of the modern era (ignoring the odd one off companion). How hard would it be? Harder than I thought.

With the exception of the majority of season eight, where she was just a little annoying, Clara has been a great companion. Jenna Coleman has had the hard task of not only being companion to two Doctors but, also during the anniversary in 2013. So when she announced that season nine would be her last there was an out pouring of appreciation. When they added that she would die there was an audible cry.

So how was it handled? ‘Face the Raven’ will go on to become a classic in the Who universe. Well written, wonderfully acted and directed with perfect pace. If it was not Clara’s exit it would be difficult to pick the stand out performance. Maisie Williams gave another great performance as Ashildr. The characters development from innocent child to villain with a conscience has been one the highlights of the whole series. Jovian Wade was subtle as Rigsy. Never taking away from those he acted with. Capaldi again showed his experience giving each line emotion and meaning. It was Jenna Coleman’s moment though and she was perfect. There was no melodrama or fanfare. Just a sense of acceptance mixed with fear.

‘Harry Potter’ comparisons aside it’s hard to find fault with ‘Face the Raven’. It was highly enjoyable, full of twists, drama and moments of sci-fi gold. There’s only two episodes left of this series. Let’s hope they’re as good as this one.

Rating out of 10: 10
